Blood pressure meds linked to breast cancer

// August 9th, 2013 // No Comments » // Breast care Indianapolis // Tags: , , ,

A new study from the JAMA suggests that long-term use of a certain medication for high blood pressure may increase an older woman’s risk of breast cancer. Researchers looked at 1900 women ages 55-74 and analyzed their use of calcium channel blockers (CCBs) in conjunction with instances of breast cancer diagnosis. Women who used CCBs for 10 years or longer were 2.4 times more likely to be diagnosed with ductal breast cancer and 2.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with lobular breast cancer, compared to other types of blood pressure medication.

No link was found between an increased breast cancer risk and other types of high blood pressure medications, such as beta-blockers or diuretics.

Millions of Americans take the drugs, and more research is needed to confirm the findings. Those who are currently taking the drugs should not stop.

The largest research study of its kind has uncovered dozens of previously unknown genetic variations that can be markers for hormone-related cancers, including breast, ovarian and prostate cancer. The findings offer new understanding of the role of gene changes in cancer risk. And results are likely to lead to new cancer screenings programs within 5 to ten years, as well as new cancer drugs that target the mechanisms of the disease.
